2024 carbon reporting data observations
What are the major emission Sources?
- Scope 3: Business Services (57.4%, 783.04 tCO₂e)
Heavily driven by printing the Australia and New Zealand magazine because we are using cost instead of activity data.
- Scope 3: Paper (22.8%, 311.44 tCO₂e)
Despite using FSC/PEFC recycled paper, volume and weight still cause significant emissions.
- Scope 3: Freight – Upstream Third Party (10.25%, 139.73 tCO₂e)
Courier and postal distribution largely attributed to Australia and New Zealand
- Scope 3: Remaining activities under 5% individually.
Scope 1 & 2
- Scope 1 & 2 contributes a small amount to total emissions (only 3.8 tCO₂e combined), but relevant for near-term 2030 reduction target.
Data accuracy challenges
- In 2024, we were only able to obtain 32% actual usage data (down from 60% in 2023).
- Spend-based reporting dominates, especially for Australia and New Zealand based suppliers.

Strategies for Reducing Emissions
99.7% of our emissions come from Scope 3.
Printing & Paper (80% of total combined emissions)
- Printing efficiency
- We are reliant on our printers to invest in technology to reduce waste in print runs. We are introducing copy re-use as a method to reduce waste in 2026.
- Newstrade magazine distribution efficiency continues to improve.
- Newstrade print is declining

Freight
– Consolidate shipments where possible.
– Negotiate with distributors for low-carbon freight options (electric vans for local deliveries, biofuel blends for long haul).
Business Services
Audit and rationalise supplier base to work with fewer, more sustainable vendors.
Data & Reporting Improvements
- By 2027, aim for >80% actual usage data to better target reductions.
- Incorporate paid ad view-based emissions into reporting by 2025.
- For ANZ, develop a supplier capability roadmap to build emissions reporting capacity over the next 3–5 years.
Offsetting (only for residual emissions post-reduction)
For the last 10% by 2050, select high-quality, verifiable offsets tied to nature-based solutions (reforestation, biodiversity protection) that align with company values.
