Reconnecting a powerful network of eco-educators with Surfers Against Sewage

Surfers Against Sewage is one of the UK’s most influential marine conservation charities – and through their Plastic Free Schools (PFS) programme, they’ve been inspiring the next generation to take action against plastic pollution since 2017.

But after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted normal school life, the PFS team faced a new challenge: re-engaging their audience of educators, many of whom were feeling stretched and overwhelmed.

That’s where we came in.

SAS asked us to help revive engagement, audit their email comms and offer actionable advice to ensure their important messages were getting through. Oh – and while we were at it, support the launch of a new teacher community space too.

Making waves with clear, actionable insights

We began with a comprehensive audit of PFS’ recent email campaigns, diving deep into everything from open rates and audience segmentation to tone of voice, timing and content structure.

We reviewed key areas like:

  • Database health
  • Send-out schedules & re-send strategies
  • Audience referrals & re-engagement tactics
  • Email content length & layout
  • Template design & accessibility

Our findings were packaged into a clear, easy-to-digest report – complete with straightforward actions for a small team to implement, without needing a full-time comms department.

Gaining insights from the people who matter most

To make sure the future strategy was built around real-world teacher behaviour, we also created a bespoke survey for PFS audiences, gathering insights on how and when they preferred to receive updates.

And yep, because we love an idea-generating brainstorm, we also suggested a few new content streams, including moment marketing, UGC (user-generated content) and ways to keep the tone fresh without losing the heart of the mission.

At the time of writing (18/08/23), the Plastic Free Schools programme had already reached 1.43 million pupils, equipping them with the campaigning skills to take on unnecessary single-use plastic. Pretty incredible stuff.

Let’s start with a chat. Big idea, small problem or “we’re not quite sure yet” – it all starts the same way. A conversation. If it feels like we’re a good fit, brilliant. If not, you’ll still leave with a few good ideas and no awkward sales follow-ups.
